Muskoka Steamship Cruise

In September, 2010, Carolyn and I went on a sunset cruise on the steamship Segwun. Our cruise began at 6pm in Gravenhurst. After boarding, we were led to the main dining room and sat down to a wonderful three course meal. First we had a green salad, then a huge roast beef entree complete with a glass of Niagara wine. This was followed by cake for dessert. During our meal we could see the beauty of the lake and cottages through the large dining room windows. One of the passengers had a guide dog in training.

After dinner we went up on deck to observe the sunset. We toured the ship including the bridge where we were greeted by the Captain and First Officer. We chatted with some of the other passengers on the forward observation deck.

Our ship returned to Gravenhurst at 9pm in total darkness. We were amazed at the skill of the Captain in docking this large steam powered vessel at night.

Two other ships sail out of Muskoka Boat & Heritage Centre, Wenonah II and Wanda III.

R.M.S. Segwun
The Royal Mail Ship Segwun is the oldest operating steamship in North America. She was built in 1887 in Glasgow, Scotland and assembled in Gravenhurst. She is powered by two coal fired steam engines. The boilers are stoked day and night for the entire season. After being lovingly restored, the ship was re-launched in 1974 by Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
